IMPORTANT NEWS

The 58th National Jazz Festival has been cancelled.

Tauranga Jazz Society’s top priority is the health and safety of our audience, artists, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community. Following the recommendation of the New Zealand government and public health officials we regretfully announce, the 58th National Jazz Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

We understand the impact this news brings to so many people. We are communicating directly with all artists, venues, sponsors and staff on next steps. Ticketek will be in contact directly with ticket holders regarding refunds. With regard to the 43rd National Youth Jazz Competition to be held 8 to 9 April, we are considering alternative dates. We will release further information on this once we have consulted with the twenty-seven schools involved.

Since 1963, our nonprofit has been committed to its mission to deliver an artistic and economic benefit to the community by way of a jazz festival – we are sorry we are not able to deliver the wonderful programme we had planned this year.

We are grateful for your understanding and support.

Ben Wilcock & The Jelly Rolls with Roger Manins

This is good times music and you can feel it deep in your bones

There is an inescapable sense of fun about this trio. They swing like crazy and they radiate mischief!

Jelly Rolls

There is an inescapable sense of fun about this trio. They swing like crazy and they radiate mischief!

Ben Wilcock & The Jelly Rolls are joined by one of NZ’s finest jazz musicians, saxophonist Roger Manins in a special one-off Festival performance.

Ben Wilcock & The Jelly Rolls contemporary Harlem Stride style encompasses piano greats such as Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson.

They will take you back to the era of speakeasies playing high energy, swinging renditions of original material from both Manins and The Jelly Rolls’ catalogue, as well as unique interpretations of jazz standards played as only this quartet can deliver.

Ben Wilcock takes centre stage on piano, with Scottish jazz superstar John Rae on the drums and Wellington multi-instrumentalist Dan Yeabsley on the double bass and saxophones.

COVID-19 Update

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Saturday afternoon tighter border controls, with everyone arriving in New Zealand having to isolate themselves for 14 days. There will be an official government directive on mass gatherings announced early next week.

We are awaiting details of the official requirements from government and local authorities and will update you as soon as possible if this could have any impact on this year’s National Jazz Festival and National Youth Jazz Competition.

Many thanks for your interest and support.
