Welcome to the Tauranga Jazz Society Newsletter, July 2019

Dear Friends of Tauranga Jazz Society,

I am happy to report that although it is only July, planning for the 2020 National Jazz Festival is now well underway, with Mandy Ryan having already met with some of our usual larger funders.

Formal applications are now underway, and we will await the result.

It is imperative that we receive that funding, and we are applying much earlier this year to enable us to be in a better position to contract performers, and sign off on the general Festival plan, earlier than historically.

Despite some serious challenges this year, we managed to turn a small profit, despite having to cancel planned activities for Easter Monday. In fact, not having those performances on Monday probably allowed us to achieve that.

I encourage you all to come along to our AGM at 7pm on August 22nd, at the Hotel Armitage, where we hope to be able to keep you up to speed with progress.

Please also put on your thinking caps about who you would like to see on our Committee for the coming year.

At this point, all of the current committee (excluding Carol Power who resigned for personal reasons during the year) and Ken Bowden and myself (who need to focus on actual retirement!) will be standing again.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Regards

President
Graeme Purches

Jazz Jam Report

Another fabulous Jazz Jam was had in June.  Life member Brian Geoghan came along and played a few tunes with the house band which featured Alana Milson on piano.  It is always a pleasure to play with Brian and Alana did a fantastic job of leading the band. Brian seemed to enjoy himself so we look forward to the next time.

This was followed by The Randy Matthews Quintet playing their slant on trad jazz, they were a hit at Swing Into Spring last year and were fabulous once again.  Their guitarist Steve Kirkby stuck around and jammed the night away. Thanks Steve.

John Ellis played some scorching soprano sax and we look forward to more of that in July.

We were also joined by a new drummer in town, Will McClure who is moving to Tauranga and we hope will become a regular.  Will has played around the world and met many of the best jazz drummers including Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach and Roy Haynes, and has played with many luminaries himself.  We look forward to his return.

Apologies for anyone I've left out. Next jam night is Wednesday 31st July. Hope to see you all there, don't forget to book if you want a table at the Mount Social Club for great food and hospitality, and of course the best jazz in town.

Cheers
Vice-President (and Gig Boss)
Jeff Baker
