The 58th National Jazz Festival has been cancelled.

Tauranga Jazz Society’s top priority is the health and safety of our audience, artists, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community. Following the recommendation of the New Zealand government and public health officials we regretfully announce, the 58th National Jazz Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

We understand the impact this news brings to so many people. We are communicating directly with all artists, venues, sponsors and staff on next steps. Ticketek will be in contact directly with ticket holders regarding refunds. With regard to the 43rd National Youth Jazz Competition to be held 8 to 9 April, we are considering alternative dates. We will release further information on this once we have consulted with the twenty-seven schools involved.

Since 1963, our nonprofit has been committed to its mission to deliver an artistic and economic benefit to the community by way of a jazz festival – we are sorry we are not able to deliver the wonderful programme we had planned this year.

Get excited, join us at Totara Street for a Funk and Soul Dance Party and shake the house down with two great bands. DJ/Saxophonist Lewis McCallum warms up the crowd from 8pm.

Sex on Toast (AUS)

Direct from Melbourne 6-piece Sex on Toast specialise in raw early 80’s funk, hard-edged new jack swing, and heartfelt blue-eyed soul. Their choreography, complex arrangements, performative larrikinism and danceability have won the hearts of casual punters and hardcore fans alike.

Mr Speaker

Mr Speaker are a 10-piece funk and soul group from Auckland playing originals, 70s hits and rarities, and funk-flavoured revamps of modern tunes. The band features members of Opensouls, Sal Valentine & the Babyshakes, Hipstamatics, and Avantdale Bowling Club.

COVID-19 Update

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Saturday afternoon tighter border controls, with everyone arriving in New Zealand having to isolate themselves for 14 days. There will be an official government directive on mass gatherings announced early next week.

We are awaiting details of the official requirements from government and local authorities and will update you as soon as possible if this could have any impact on this year’s National Jazz Festival and National Youth Jazz Competition.
